Why Adrenal Fatigue is NOT the Cause of Your Tiredness with Evan H. Hirsch, MD - #143
00:00
Hey there, welcome back to the EnergyMD Podcast where we help you resolve your chronic fatigue, whether it's from long COVID or chronic fatigue syndrome, so that you can get back to living your best life. So today I'd really like to talk about why adrenal fatigue is not the cause of your chronic fatigue. So it's really important to remember that
00:28
your chronic fatigue has multiple causes. It's not ackham's razor, as they say. It's not one thing that can explain all of your symptoms. So when you have your chronic fatigue, brain fog, body pain, all of those things, and you go to see a provider, they're going to try to find out what one cause potentially you have, if you're going to see a conventional doctor. They may say it's thyroid, and they may say it's something else. And then if you go to a naturopath, or if you go to a functional medicine doctor,
00:57
They're going to find different causes, but what they're really going to be focused on is the deficiencies that you have. So this can be your adrenals, mitochondrial dysfunction, thyroid, sex hormones, vitamins, minerals, lifestyle habits. So those are all significant and working on all of those can be very helpful. But if you really have chronic fatigue, you're going to have root causes underneath this that need to be addressed.
01:25
So let's back up a second. So if you start replacing the adrenals, the adrenals are responsible for regulating your stress response and your get up and go in the morning by producing cortisol. So that means that the cortisol increases in the morning, comes down throughout the day, allows you to sleep better. Your mitochondria produces about 70 to 90% of your energy and it gets damaged through the process that we're gonna talk about in a little bit. And so replacing those with different nutrients can be very supportive as well.
01:54
everything works better when the thyroid is optimized. So I call those the big three, the adrenals, the mitochondria and the thyroid. And these are all part of what I call step two, which is replacing the deficiencies. And then there's sex hormones and vitamins and minerals and lifestyle habits. So if you replace those, you're working on all those different aspects, you're gonna see improvement most likely. Now the people in my program, about 50% of them see improvement by doing this, but then they plateau.
02:23
You might get your energy up from a 5 out of 10 to a 6 out of 10, but that's not sufficient in terms of how you want to live your life and being able to do all the things that you want to do. So the real root causes below all of these causes, and actually the causes of these deficiencies, majority of these deficiencies, is what I call the toxic 5. And that's a combination of the heavy metals, chemicals, molds, infections, and nervous system dysfunction that build up in your body over time.
02:53
From the moment that you're born, you get toxins dumped into you from mom, all good stuff and not so good stuff from mom through the placenta. And then you have exposures to a number of things, non-organic food. So you get pesticides and herbicides and insecticides, you know, you're, you're crawling on the ground. And so, you know, you're going to get lead from the lead dust. You're going to get mold from the home that potentially you're living in. Since half of all buildings have water damage and most of those have molds.
03:23
there's going to be heavy metals that you get exposed to. You know, I grew up eating lots of tuna fish. The bigger the fish, the more mercury. Unfortunately, all of our oceans, everything that comes out of the ocean now has mercury in it. The smaller the fish, like anchovies or sardines, you're gonna have less mercury, but there's still gonna be some. So that's the heavy metals and the chemicals and the molds. And then there's different infections that you come into contact with, whether it's a regular virus, whether it's Epstein-Barr virus, whether it's a Lyme.
03:53
getting bit by a tick, a chigger, a biting fly, a mosquito, kissing the wrong person or the right person, all of these different infections you are going to get throughout your life. And if you have the heavy metals, chemicals, and molds, then the infections will become opportunistic. The immune system will be off in left field, dealing with the heavy metals, chemicals, and molds, and the infections can become opportunistic. This is the same reason why people get post-viral syndromes
04:23
long COVID. So that's what I have seen. And interestingly, this these toxic five, and I've talked on the toxic four, and I'll come back to that in just a second, but, but they will cause those deficiencies. So they will cause the adrenals and the mitochondria and the thyroid and the sex hormones and the vitamins and minerals, all to become more deficient, because they're utilizing the resources, they're causing stress on the human organism. And consequently, then you have those deficiencies.
04:52
So essentially replacing the deficiencies is a bandaid, which means that replacing your adrenals, even though it can be helpful, and I do recommend it as part of this overall process, it is still a bandaid. What we use is natural, and so we're using natural bandaids. And it's still an important part of the process, like I said, but you have to keep your eye on the prize. You should spend about a month replacing your deficiencies, about a month opening up the exit pathways, the liver, the kidney, the lymph.
05:20
the neurolymph in the brain, the gallbladder, the intestines, making sure all those pathways are open so that when you go into step four and you start removing the toxic five, they have a place to go, right? You have to be able to get them out of your body. And if you are starting to mobilize those toxins and you're feeling worse, this is because you have not done enough work in step three and you have to pivot back into there and start opening up the pathways a little bit more because you really need to detoxify at a rate
05:50
that your body can tolerate. And everybody's an individual. So consequently, the rates that you can tolerate is going to be different than somebody else. So in terms of the toxic five, we talked about the heavy metals, the chemicals, the molds, the infections, and then the nervous system dysfunction. So with nervous system dysfunction, we don't know whether it's 10% of your issue or 90%. And this can be really significant. Trauma.
06:17
or it can be anything that happened in your life that changed the way that you worked, looked at the world and made you realize that the world was not necessarily a safe place. It is a safe place and you are safe and you are enough and you are loved and you can trust and you can surrender into yourself and into the world and know that you are going to be taken care of. But those aren't messages that you've gotten throughout your life. And so consequently, you will have nervous system dysfunction.
06:45
and that will stress out your adrenals as well. And so you will have adrenal gland deficiency or some people call it adrenal fatigue. So really important to make sure that you're working on all of the Toxic V so that you can be as successful as possible. And it takes about nine to 12, sometimes 18 months or beyond in order to get rid of the Toxic V. Our programs, the expectation is that it's going to take at least 12 months so that people understand that
07:15
Three months, six months, they're not going to feel better. Generally the magic happens around month nine, but it all builds and removing these toxins takes time. The other thing to note is that the toxic five really are bound up together in what I call the toxic matrix. So these are the, they're kind of attached to each other. And when you start to go after one of them, like removing the heavy metals or the chemicals or the molds, it opens up this toxic matrix where they're all bound up.
07:44
and it releases the other toxins and infections. And consequently, you're going to feel worse if you haven't appropriately prepared for that. So go through the four step process. I didn't mention the first step, which is figuring out the causes you have. Um, and what I found is that everybody has the toxic five plus adrenal gland and mitochondrial dysfunction. And then the other ones are, are, um, are individualized or variable that we have to figure out for the individual, but you figure out your causes.
08:11
In step one, step two, you replace your deficiencies so that you can be more resilient and potentially get a little uptick in energy. And then step three, you're opening up the exit pathways. And step four, you're gonna be spending the most amount of time in the program and that's removing the toxic five. All right, I hope that was helpful today and I hope that helped clarify things because do not spend all of your time trying to research how to fix your adrenals because that is just a small part of this overall process.
08:40
and you're really just touching the surface. You want to look at what the root cause is of the adrenal gland deficiency that you have, right? It adrenal gland deficiency or adrenal fatigue is not a root cause. All right. Thanks so much for listening. Hope this was helpful for you.
